Day Two
The Basilica di Santa Maria Novella ( Click here ) is your first destination of
the day. Be sure to look behind the altar to discover Domenico Ghirlandaio's
vivid frescoes in the Cappella Maggiore, and go to the Cappellone degli Spagnoli (Spanish
Chapel) to admire Andrea di Bonaiuto's monumental fresco cycle. Afterwards, enjoy a
cup of tea in the genteel surrounds of the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa
Maria Novella ( Click here ).
San Lorenzo is your next stop. Duck past the market stalls to visit the basilica (
Click here ) and then head around the corner to admire Michelangelo works and
Medici conceit in the Cappelle Medicee ( Click here ). For lunch, sit with the stall-holders
at Trattoria Mario ( Click here ) or munch on a panino con bollito (hefty boiled-beef
bun) at Da Nerbone ( Click here ) in the Mercato Centrale (Central Market). Afterwards,
join the queue of Michelangelo devotees waiting to come face-to-face with David at the
Galleria dell'Accademia ( Click here ) .
As the sun goes down, head to Santa Croce and follow our local life itinerary (
Click here ) to make the most of this hipster hotspot.
