Italy uses GSM 900/1800, compatible with the rest of Europe and Australia but not with
North American GSM 1900 or the Japanese system.
›
For a local prepaid SIM card, you must register with a telecommunications provider
such as TIM, Vodafone or Wind; all have a shops in major Tuscan towns. Accounts take
about 24 hours to activate (you'll need to show your passport). Costs are as low as €20
(some with €10 worth of calls on the card) and
ricarica
(prepaid minutes) can then be
purchased from provider shops,
tabacchi
or newsstands. If you have an internet-enabled
phone, be sure to turn off your data roaming function when you're not using it, as it de-
vours credit.

Mobile-phone numbers begin with a three-digit prefix such as 330.
