Cattedrale di San Martino
This predominantly Romanesque cathedral (Piazza San Martino;
7am-6pm summer, to 5pm
winter; sacristy 9.30am-4.45pm Mon-Fri, 9.30am-6.45pm Sat, 11.30am-5pm Sun; sacristy adult/reduced €3/2, with
cathedral museum & Chiesa dei SS Giovanni e Reparata €7/5) dates to the start of the 11th century. In-
side, the Volto Santo is a simply fashioned Christ on a wooden crucifix that dates from
the 13th century.
Memorial to Ilaria del Carretto
Enter the cathedral's sacristy to admire this gleaming marble memorial, carved by Ja-
copo della Quercia in 1407. The young second wife of a 15th-century lord of Lucca,
Ilaria died in childbirth aged 24. At her feet lies her faithful dog.
Palazzo Pfanner
Take a stroll around this beautiful, 17th-century palace ( www.palazzopfanner.it ; Via degli Asili 33;
palace or garden adult/reduced €4.50/4, both €6/5; 10am-6pm summer) where parts of Jane Campion's
The Portrait of a Lady (1996) were shot. Highlights include the frescoed and furnished
piano nobile (main reception room) and the gorgeous, baroque-styled garden - the only
one of substance within the city walls.
