A fine example of Pisan-Gothic style, this now-decommissioned church, built in 1230,
was originally called Santa Maria di Pontenovo. In 1333 it acquired a reliquary of a spina
(thorn) from Christ's crown and was renamed as a result. Its ornately spired exterior is en-
crusted with tabernacles and statues. At the time of research the interior was closed to the
public. (Lungarno Gambacorti)
