Palazzo Pitti
Wealthy banker Luca Pitti commissioned Brunelleschi to
design this huge palace in 1457, but by the time it was
completed the family fortunes were on the wane and they
were forced to sell it to arch-rivals, the Medicis. It subse-
quently became home to the dukes of Lorraine and their
successors. When Florence was made capital of the nas-
cent Kingdom of Italy in 1865, the palace became a resid-
ence of the Savoys, who presented it to the state in 1919.
