Go to Jail!
Florence's red-brick, old city jail (1883-1985) is now one of the city's most exciting cultural spaces. There's no
mistaking the sturdy doors leading to the old prison cells, many of which now open onto the likes of a bookshop,
a wine bar and an art gallery.
The pièce de résistance is Le Murate Caffè Letterario ( 055 234 68 72; www.lemurate.it; Piazza delle
Murate Firenze; 9-1am), a cafe-bar where Florence's literati meet over coffee, drinks and light meals. The
cafe hosts everything from readings and interviews with authors - Florentine, Italian and international - to film
screenings, debates, live music and art exhibitions. Its funky interior has vintage chairs and table tops built from
recycled window frames. In summer everything spills onto the wonderful brick courtyard. Check upcoming
events online.
