Favourite journeys:
It took 40 men four days to transport the statue along rails from Michelangelo's workshop
behind the Duomo to Piazza della Signoria in 1504. Its journey to the Galleria dell'Accademia in 1873 took
seven days.
Why the small dick?:
In classical art a large packet was not deemed elegant.
And the big head and hands?:
David
was designed to stand up high on a cathedral buttress in the apse, from
which his head and hand would have appeared in proportion.
Occupational hazards:
Over the centuries he's been struck by lightning and attacked by rioters. The two lines
visible on his lower left arm are the spot where his arm was broken during the 1527 revolt when the Medicis
were kicked out of Florence.
