Accessed via a door to the left of the Basilica di San Lorenzo's facade is the cloister,
from which stairs lead to the loggia and this library commissioned by Giulio de' Medici
(Pope Clement VII) in 1524. The staircase in the vestibule, intended as a 'dark prelude'
to the magnificent Sala di Lettura (Reading Room), was designed by Michelangelo.
