Facade
The basilica is considered one of the most harmonious examples of Renaissance architec-
ture, yet it was never finished. Medici pope Leo X commissioned Michelangelo to design
the facade in 1518, but his design in white Carrara marble was never executed and the
building has retained its rough and extremely unattractive underlayer ever since.
