Basilica di San Lorenzo
Founded in the 4th-century, San Lorenzo is considered
Florence's oldest church. The current incarnation dates to
1425, when Cosimo the Elder hired Brunelleschi to spruce
up the parish church to create a more suitable resting place
for the Medici clan. The result: a gruff facade of rough-cut
stones that belies an extraordinary, light-flooded interior.
The harmonious internal arrangement of classical Cor-
inthian columns of pietra serena (soft grey stone) was unlike anything seen before in
Christendom.
