a point 18 kilometres (11 miles) out to sea, measured from the Phra Chulachomklao Fort
at the mouth of the river, which for the charts is marked as Km 0. This stretch is known
as the outer bar, and a channel varying between 150 and 250 metres (492 and 820 ft), de-
pending on curvature, is maintained at a depth of 8.5 metres (27 ft) below mean sea level,
a formidable and continuous job that requires four types of dredger, namely bucket, shell,
backhoe and suction dredgers.
