already covered for loss of life, limb, permanent disablement, some medical expenses, theft
and so on. These multi-trip policies can be basic as well as quite cheap, but it's essential to
check the small print of what the policy covers as it's possible that there may be a clause
compelling the insured to return to the UK after a short period of time.
Just like many of the 'free' insurance policies that come with bank accounts, many of these
policies only cover for trips of up to 60 days at a time, at which point travellers had to re-
turn to the UK. In other words, great for a holiday or two or for a business traveller but no
use at all if you plan to be out of the country for the whole year.
In this case you can start by finding out (through the broker or agent who sold you the
policy) if any additional cover can be tacked on to your existing policy, though this can be
expensive and most off-the-shelf policies won't do it. A specific gap-year or backpacking
policy may be more appropriate and actually work out cheaper than trying to add stuff on.
Try to find a policy that doesn't already duplicate what is covered by an existing policy
(they don't pay out twice), but some duplication is unavoidable and it's obviously better to
be covered twice than not at all.
