Fill shoes, cups etc with socks and undies to save space.
Tie up loose backpack straps before it goes into transit.
Now sit down and rationalise - cross off everything you don't really need. Pack enough
clothes to see you through - about five changes of clothing should last you for months if
you choose carefully. Don't take anything that doesn't go with everything else and stick
to materials that are comfortable, hard-wearing, easy to wash and dry and don't crease too
much. Make sure you have clothes that are suitable for the climates you are visiting and
don't forget that the temperatures in some dry climates can drop considerably at night!
You can find very lightweight waterproofs and thermals that can be rolled up easily.

what were the most useful things, what they didn't need and what they wished they had
taken.
