Sort the paperwork
If you need to get yourself a passport for the first time, application forms are available from
Post Offices or you can apply online. But remember: passport interviews are a new part of
the process and are required by all applicants, aged 16 or over, who are applying for a pass-
port for the first time.
You can call 0300 222 1000 to make an appointment or for other enquiries about this, but
remember also that first time applicants can't use the fast track service.
There are 68 interview offices around the country and you have to go to the correct one for
where you live - see the map on the IPS (Identity and Passport Office) website:
maps.direct.gov.uk/LDGRedirect/MapAction.do?ref=passportinterviewoffices
The standard adult ten-year passport currently costs £72.50 and you'll need your birth cer-
tificate and passport photos. It should take no more than a month from the time you apply
to the time you receive your passport, but the queue lengthens coming up to peak summer
holiday season.
You can use the Passport Office 'Check and Send' service at selected Post Offices
throughout the UK or send it direct. The 'Check and Send' service gets your application
checked for completeness (including documentation and fee) and is given priority by the IPS
- they are usually able to process these applications in two weeks.
If your passport application is urgent and you're not applying for the first time, you can use
the guaranteed same-day (Premium) service or the guaranteed one-week (Fast Track) ser-
vice. Both services are only available by appointment at one of the seven IPS offices around
the UK (phone the IPS Advice Line on 0300 222 0000), and both are more expensive (£128
for Premium, £103 for Fast Track).
The services are only available for renewals and amendments. And although you'll get a
fixed appointment you'll almost certainly have to wait in a queue after this for your passport.
The IPS website is very helpful: www.ips.gov.uk
The FCO provided us with a checklist to help sort your travel documents:
Check your passport is valid for the country you are travelling to - some countries
require six months left to run after your return date to the UK so check this as soon
as you can to allow plenty of time.
Keep your passport in a safe place while you're away, ideally in the hotel safe. Pack
a photocopy of the main personal details and photograph page for ID purposes, so
it's easier to replace if it goes missing.
