Gap-year specialists
If you would like to get a work placement from a gap-year specialist, the contacts listed in
the directory sections in this guidebook are a good starting point for organisations to ap-
proach.
Another option is the Year Out Group, the voluntary association of gap specialists formed
to promote the concept and benefits of well-structured year out programmes and to help
people select suitable and worthwhile projects. The group's member organisations are lis-
ted on their website and provide a wide range of year out placements in the UK and over-
seas, including structured work placements.
Year Out Group members are expected to put potential clients and their parents in contact
with those who have recently returned. They consider it important that these references are
taken up at least by telephone and, where possible, by meeting face-to-face.

Gap-year employers
In the directory we've listed companies that either have specific gap-year employment
policies or ones that we think are worth contacting. We've split them into three groups:
festivals, seasonal work and graduate opportunities and work experience.
This isn't a comprehensive list, so it's still worth checking the internet and your local com-
panies (in the Yellow Pages , for example).
