Playing sport
More and more people are looking to take a sports gap-year with a purpose, so they are using
their time out to play a season of sport abroad: for example cricket in Australia, or rugby in
New Zealand or South Africa.
Placements on these 'academy programmes' will usually mean you are matched with a club
abroad at a suitable level for your standard, for whom you play at the weekends whilst per-
fecting your game throughout the week with coaching, fitness training and sports psycho-
logy from local coaches.
You may be set a specific training regime to stick to, which might include things like:
Gym fitness work and flexibility training.
Sport-specific fitness training.
One-on-one sessions to develop specific skills.
Video analysis.
Group training sessions with other academy players.
Club practice sessions.
Sessions with players of a higher standard, perhaps even professionals.
Of course, you don't have to be looking at improving your skills to a semi-professional
standard. You can also use your gap-year to take up a completely new sport. Perhaps you are
interested in learning jiu-jitsu in Brazil, or polo in Argentina - you can certainly find place-
ments to cover most sports in a huge range of countries.

types, this means really exciting stuff, activities and adventures that get the butterflies going
and gives you very sweaty palms.
There are companies that organise adrenaline-pumping activities in various locations around
the world. These include adventures that really test your metal on a gap-year can have pos-
itive consequences when you return home.
That could mean bungee jumping or skydiving, scuba diving, swimming with whalesharks
in Thailand or learning to surf in Australia. It would certainly pay to book before you go
- you can organise things in-country but why take the chance of missing out? Also bear in
