a lively German community in the UK and many courses run by the Goethe Institut

practising your German when you get back.
Greek
The thoughts of the great philosophers such as Socrates and Aristotle, upon whose ideas
the foundations of western values were built, were written in ancient Greek.
Democracy, aristocracy, philosophy, pedagogy and psychology are just some of the many
Greek terms that are part of our culture and language.
Modern Greek is spoken by ten million Greek citizens and by about seven million others
spread around the world.
Indonesian
Based on the Malay trade dialect, Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of the Republic
of Indonesia. In a country of more than 230 million people, who speak over 580 different
dialects, having a national language makes communication easier, in much the same way
as Hindi does in India.
There's no general greeting in Indonesian; there are different words specific to the time of
day. But it's said to be an easy language to learn and Indonesia is such a popular backpack-
