Media and journalism
Although the print media has been suffering from the global recession there are, of course,
other options.
You may want to get into media/journalism but you're not the only one, so do thousands of
others and the competition is intense. The skills you'll need could include media law, short-
hand, knowledge of how local and national government works and, not least, the ability to
construct an attention-grabbing story!
To get a job you may need to do more than gain a media studies degree or have on-the-job
training in a newsroom.
It's, therefore, always a good idea to demonstrate your commitment and a gap is a good time
to do this. You can try contacting your local paper for a work experience placement, though
don't expect to be paid!
Plus, if you search the internet there are plenty of internships in newsrooms - many of them
in India, where there's still a lot of attachment to local and national newspapers. We Googled
'journalism placements and internships' and found possibilities around the world. These
