Stiff competition
As more people are becoming motivated by the almost daily media reports on poverty in the
developing world and on various global threats to the planet's climate, ecology and environ-
ment, to go out and do something, the competition for places can be fierce. Companies can
afford to be picky - you may find you have to prove to them that you should be selected to
go before they will accept your money!
They have a point. Increasingly NGOs and volunteers are trying to make sure both sides be-
nefit from the experience, so placement organisations put a lot of effort into checking and
briefing as well as getting you out there and providing in-country support. If you can't stick
it, everyone loses out - including the person who could have been chosen instead of you.
