In-Depth Information
How much time do you want to spend?
This is about how committed a volunteer you want to be. Would you feel more satisfied
spending two weeks on a building project providing homes for people displaced by a natural
disaster? Or are you the kind of person who wants to get stuck into a long-term project,
where the results you see will be more gradual?
Because voluntary work is so popular with gappers, commercial companies offering vo-
lunteering packages exist alongside the more traditional not-for-profit organisations and the
idealism associated with voluntary work, though still there, has come under some commer-
cial pressure.
Some companies offer two to four-week holidays combined with some voluntary work, but
equally there are many organisations still committed to the idealism of volunteering, offer-
ing placements from a few months to up a year or more.
However, you may not want (or be able) to offer more than a few weeks or months of your
time, so the combined holiday/short volunteering option might be for you. There's no point
in committing yourself to a whole year only to find that, after a few weeks, you hate it and
want to go home early. The two-to four-week option may also be a good 'taster' experience
to help you decide whether to commit to something more long-term.
So, it's a good idea to be honest with yourself about what you want - there's nothing wrong
with wanting to travel and have a good time. But, whatever you choose, make sure you are
clear about what you will be doing before you sign up and part with your money.
