Teaching English in private lessons
If you decide to supplement your income in-country by giving private lessons, you can put
notices in schools, colleges, newspapers and local shops but there are some basic safety
precautions you should take:
1.
Be careful how you word your ad - eg 'Young English girl offering English les-
sons' is likely to draw the wrong kind of attention.
2.
If you arrange one-to-one tuition, don't go to your student's home until you've
checked out how safe it would be.
3.
Equally, if you're living alone, don't give classes at home until you've got to know
your student.
4.
Arrange classes in public, well-populated locations, which will also help as teach-
ing aids (coffee bars, restaurants, shops, markets etc ).
5.
Make sure you're both clear about your fee (per hour) and when it should be paid
(preferably these should both be put in writing).
Usually, you'll be inundated by friends of friends as word gets round there's an English
person willing to give private lessons.
