Choosing your destination
There are some jobs that always need to be done, whatever the state of the world, and if
you're just looking at ways of funding your travel you could look for seasonal farm work.
In most cases, gappers intending to do seasonal work outside the EU need to have a job
offer in order to get a visa. If you should find that, when you get there the job is no longer
available, you can try elsewhere - but we would advise you to have a back-up plan before
you set off on your travels ( eg contacts, an emergency fund, names of companies that spe-
cialise in work overseas).
If you are a UK citizen, or hold an EU (European Union) passport, you can work in any oth-
er EU member country without a visa or work permit and there are countless jobs available
to students who can speak the right languages. Not all European countries are EU members
- go to the European Union website to check: www.europa.eu
Speaking English is always an advantage for jobs in tourism at ski resorts, beach bars and
hotel receptions and if you have a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certi-
ficate there's always the option of paid teaching.
You could try using message boards to find out what other gappers have done and what it
was like. If you want to be more adventurous and venture outside Europe, then check the
Foreign Office website - www.fco.gov.uk - for important advice on your possible destina-
tions.
