In-Depth Information
Extravagappers are thought of as newly-redundant city professionals with generous re-
dundancy packages, who are taking the opportunity of a career break rather than plunge
back into a possibly demoralising, recession-hit job market.
Flashpackers are those with backpacking with 'flash or style', who typically spend freely,
or even excessively, for activities at their chosen destination.
These are caricatures, of course. People who take career breaks come from all sorts of back-
grounds, and with varying degrees of affluence.
Taking a career break for one month to a year is the fastest-growing sector of gap-year
activity and there's some anecdotal evidence that the global recession is increasing the
numbers.
Around 90,000 people take a short sabbatical each year in the UK - in other words a 'gap-
month'. It may be worthwhile considering something like this, or perhaps a longer trip if
you've been made redundant or taken early retirement.
