In-Depth Information
return ticket, as most gappers do, the best way to go is to use your existing return, if the
airline will reschedule, claim for it, then book another return flight. It's often cheaper to
book a return flight than an extra one-way only.
If your ticket cannot be changed and you need to purchase a new ticket for your return jour-
ney, this can be arranged via a flight-ticketing agent or direct with the appropriate airline
(subject to availability of flights and seats).
Websites such as Expedia and ebookers offer a wide selection of flights including single
leg and one way tickets, which you can buy online and be allocated e-tickets, or collect
them from the airline sales desk at the airport.
During peak travel or holiday times you might find the quickest way to get home may be
to go to the airport and wait to pick up a 'no show' seat on standby.
Finally, make sure you read the small print. This may seem like a laborious task but it can

Ongoing medication and vaccinations are usually not covered.
Dental treatment costs are usually for emergency treatment only.
If an insurance company says they'll fly you home in a medical emergency, bear
in mind that it won't be up to you - the doctors and the insurance companies will
decide how serious is.
If you can wait until you get home to be treated, it's unlikely your cover will cover
any costs of treatment you think you might need.
If you're going to do sports, make sure they're covered - don't just assume. Many
companies make you pay extra for adventure sports and activity insurance.
If you're 'off your head' when you hurt yourself then there's a good chance you'll
foot the bill.
If your airline goes bust you're unlikely to be covered - unless you've got Airline
Failure Insurance.
If you forget to report a theft to the police, you probably won't be covered for the
loss.
And don't forget to take the contact phone number of your insurance company with you
in case of emergency. Carry it around with you in your money belt, in your rucksack and
in your wallet. Also copy the policy number and any other reference you will need if you
