10. OPERA DE NICE
This ornate building is home to ballet, classical music and opera. The theatre, de-
signed by François Aune, a pupil of Gustave Eiffel, was reconstructed in 1885 fol-
lowing a fire which entirely destroyed the original. The opera house was classified a

Baroque Churches
Vieux Nice is celebrated for its Baroque churches. In addition to those men-
tioned here, there are half a dozen others worth visiting: Ste Rita (rue de la
Poisonnerie); Gésu (rue Droite), St Martin-St-Augustin (pl St-Augustin); St
François-de-Paule (rue St-François-de-Paule), St- Suaire (rue St-Suaire) and
the Chapelle des Pénitents Rouges (Rue Jules Gilly - Latin Mass every Sunday
morning).
Tip: Resist free drinks on cours Saleya; they're offered by restaurateurs try-
ing to tempt you to a table.
Tip: Vieux Nice is for pedestrians only. There's parking on place Masséna,
blvd Jean-Jaurès and near cours Saleya and place Gautier.
