MOUNTAIN VILLAGES
1. ST-PAUL-DE-VENCE
The prettiest and best known of the region's villages perchés (for further details see
Perched Villages ) , St-Paul was first built as a refuge from Saracen raiders. From its
ramparts there are terrific views down to the sea (for further details see St-Paul-de-
Vence ) .

2. PUGET-THENIERS
The village stands where the Roudoule river meets the Var, overlooked by the ruins
of the Château-Musée Grimaldi . The Romanesque church has a beautiful 16th-cen-
tury altarpiece (for further details see Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, Puget-
Théniers ) .

3. ST-CEZAIRE
This hill village has been settled since the Roman era and has medieval walls and
watch towers. Nearby are the grottoes of St-Cézaire, an underground wonderland.

4. GOURDON
From the village square, where the hillside drops into a limestone gorge, you can see
