9. SALLE DES MARIAGES, MENTON
Jean Cocteau decorated this room in Menton's town hall in 1957, adorning it with
colourful images of a fishing couple and the tragic story of Orpheus and Eurydice.
More of his work can be seen in the Musée Jean Cocteau located on the seafront.

10. VILLA KERYLOS, BEAULIEU-SUR-MER
Theodore Reinach (1860-1928) created this remarkable building, constructed
between 1902 and 1908, as a perfect Classical Greek villa, in imitation of the palace of
Delos in Greece, dating from the 2nd century BC. Copies of ancient mosaics and fres-

The Grimaldis of Monaco
Monaco's Grimaldi dynasty is the oldest ruling family in the world. François
Grimaldi, disguised as a monk, seized the castle in 1297. By 1489 France and Sa-
voy recognized Monaco's independence. In 1612 Honore II was the first lord to
take the title of prince. During the French Revolution the prince and his family
were ousted, to be restored to their throne in 1814.
A Morning Tour of The Rock
Start this walk around the oldest part of Monaco, where the Grimaldis founded
their principality. Visit the state apartments and the Prince's Palace , taking
in the lavish salons, throne room and 17th-century chapel. In one wing is the
Musée des Souvenirs Napoléoniens • Open Apr-Nov: 10am-6pm daily;
Dec-Mar: 10:30am-5pm daily • Adm housing over 1,000 items, including
