10. MUSEE DES ARTS DECORATIFS, DE LA FAÏENCE ET DE
LA MODE
Fully restored to its former glory, Château Borély, a masterpiece of 18th-century ar-
chitecture, now houses exhibition space devoted to three genres: decorative arts and
furniture; earthenware, ceramics and glass; and fashion from the 17th century to the
present day. The museum brings together collections formerly scattered between the
Musée de la Faïence, Musée Cantini and the Musée de Vieux Marseille, along with
the furniture collection of the Château itself. The lovely gardens also host outdoor

The Football Capital
First champions of Europe, then enmeshed in match-fixing scandals, the recent
history of the Olympique de Marseille football team has matched the turbulence
of its home town. But this has done nothing to dissuade the fans of the most
popular French team - football is the life blood of Marseille life, the Stade Vélo-
drome its place of worship.
A morning exploring Marseille
From the Quai des Belges on the Vieux Port walk up La Canebière, the commer-
cial hub of the 19th-century city, where you can still sense the Second Empire
grandeur. Almost immediately on the left, the Palais de la Bourse (Stock Ex-
change) is a monumental expression of trading confidence; it now contains the
Musée de la Marine detailing Marseille's sea-going history Open daily •Adm .
At the Neo-Gothic Eglise des Réformés, cross to place Stalingrad and enjoy a
drink by the fountain at Brasserie Danaïdes.
Take the leafy cours Joseph Thierry, then blvd Longchamp to the Musée Grobet-
Labadié and Palais Longchamp , then wander the lush Longchamp park to place
Maréchal Foch. Take the blvd de la Libération, left into rue St Savournin to cours
Julien, a lively centre for musicians and artists.
