One booming business in the city is
swiftlet farming
. Walk down Th Lak Meuang and you'll
soon figure out that the top floors of a shophouse have been purposefully converted into a
nesting site for a flock of birds who produce the edible nests considered a delicacy
among the Chinese. Swiflets' nests were quite rare (and expensive) because they were
only harvested from precipitous sea caves by trained, daring climbers. But in the 1990s,
entrepreneurs figured out how to replicate the cave atmosphere in multistorey shophouses
and the business has become a key operation throughout Southeast Asia and here in Trat.
