6. CAR SHARING
Zipcar ( www.zipcar.com ) is an hourly car rental program. Plan members ($50 an-
nual membership fee) can reserve a car, pick it up at a Metro station, then return it.
Rates start at $7 (gas and insurance included). Car2Go ( www.car2go.com ) rents tiny
Smart cars by the minute.
7. RENTAL CARS
Rental car companies are located at all airports, Union Station, and many other loc-
ations. You can find the nearest one with the help of the Yellow Pages . Renting a car
requires a valid driver's license and a major credit card. Drivers must be at least 25
years old. Most cars are automatic; you may be able to book a stick-shift in advance.

8. PARKING
Parking at a car lot will cost about $20 per day and about $12 for two hours. Street
parking meters have a two-hour maximum, and fines are high. Parking is prohibited
on many downtown streets during rush hour, with hours posted on curbside signs.
Your car will be towed if you disregard them.
9. EXCURSIONS
Some out-of-town attractions such as Mount Vernon can be reached by tour bus
lines. Others are also served by rail. Most out-of-town destinations have ample park-
ing.
10. MAPS
The Smithsonian Information Center has brochures and maps; hotels and news-
stands usually sell maps of the metropolitan area and the rail and bus system.
