TATE BRITAIN
Millbank Pimlico 020 7887 8888, www.tate.org.uk .Daily 10am-6pm.Free. MAP
A purpose-built gallery founded in 1897 with money from Henry Tate, inventor of the sugar
cube, Tate Britain is devoted almost exclusively to British art from 1500 to the present day.
In addition, the gallery showcases contemporary British artists and sponsors the Turner Pr-
ize, the country's most prestigious modern-art award.
The pictures are rehung more or less annually, but always include a fair selection of works
by British artists such as Hogarth, Constable, Gainsborough, Reynolds and Blake, plus for-
eign artists like van Dyck who spent much of their career over here. The ever-popular Pre-
Raphaelites are well represented, as are established twentieth-century greats including
Stanley Spencer, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud and living artists such as David Hockney.
Lastly, don't miss the Tate's outstanding Turner collection , displayed in the Clore Gallery.
