Romans invade and establish a permanent military camp by the Thames called Londinium.
c.61
Queen Boudica, leader of the Iceni tribe, burns Londinium to the ground.
c.100
Londinium becomes the capital of the Roman province of Britannia, eventually boasting a
vast basilica, a forum, an amphitheatre and several baths.
410
The Romans abandon Londinium and leave the place at the mercy of marauding Saxon pir-
ates.
871-1066
The Danes and Norwegians fight it out with the kings of Wessex over who should control
London.
1066
Following the defeat of the English King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, William the Con-
queror, Duke of Normandy, is crowned king in Westminster Abbey.
1290
King Edward I expels London's Jewish population.
1348
The Black Death wipes out a third of London's population of 75,000.
1381
During the Peasants' Revolt, London is overrun by the rebels who lynch the archbishop,
plus countless rich merchants and clerics.
1532-39
The Reformation: King Henry VIII breaks with the Roman Catholic church, establishes the
Church of England, dissolves the monasteries and executes religious dissenters.
