There's no getting away from the fact that accommodation in London is expensive.
Compared with most European cities, you pay over the odds in every category. The
cheapest option is to go to one of the independent hostels, where dorm beds start at
around £20. Going up a notch, even the most basic B&Bs struggle to bring their tariffs
below £90 for a double with shared facilities, which is why so many people head for the
budget chain hotels. For a really decent hotel room, you shouldn't expect much change
out of £100 a night. Most B&Bs and many hotels are housed in former residential prop-
erties, which means that rooms tend to be on the small side. That said, even the most ba-
sic rooms tend to have TVs, and breakfast is nearly always included in the price.
Though hostels normally don't provide breakfast, they do usually have cooking facilities
- exceptions are mentioned in the text. The prices quoted are for the cheapest double
room or dorm bed in high season, though rates often vary online and according to avail-
ability .
