TREETOP WALKWAY, KEW GARDENS
RICHMOND
Richmond & Richmond train station. MAP
Pedestrianized, terraced and redeveloped in the 1980s, Richmond's riverside is a neo-Geor-
gian pastiche for the most part, and a popular one at that. The real joy of the waterfront,
though, is Richmond Bridge , an elegant span of five arches made from Purbeck stone in
1777 and cleverly widened in the 1930s, thus preserving what is London's oldest extant
Thames bridge. From April to October you can rent rowing boats from the nearby jetties, or
take a boat trip to Hampton Court or Westminster. Alternatively, simply head south down
the towpath, past the terraced gardens which give out great views over the river. On either
side are the wooded banks of the Thames: to the left cows graze on Petersham Meadows;
beyond lies Ham House.
