The wealthy suburbs of Kew and Richmond like to think of themselves as apart from
the rest of London, and in many ways they are. Both have a distinctly rural feel: Kew,
thanks to its outstanding botanic gardens; Richmond, owing to its picturesque riverside
setting and its gigantic park. Taking the leafy towpath from Richmond Bridge to one of
the nearby stately homes, or soaking in the view from Richmond Park, you'd be forgiv-
en for thinking you were in the countryside. Both Kew and Richmond are an easy tube
ride from the centre, but the most pleasant way to reach them is to take one of the boats
that plough up the Thames from Westminster.
