The Fan Museum is a fascinating little place (and an extremely beautiful house) to the west
of Greenwich Park, revealing the importance of the fan as a social and political document.
The permanent exhibition on the ground floor traces the history of the fan and the materials
employed, from peacock feathers to straw, while the temporary exhibitions on the first floor
explore conditions of production, the fan's link with the Empire and changing fashion. Out-
side, there's a tearoom, housed in the kitsch, hand-painted orangery, with afternoon tea
served (Tues & Sun 2.15 & 3.45pm).

Established in 1675 by Charles II to house the first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, the
Royal Observatory perches on the crest of Greenwich Park's highest hill. The oldest part of
the complex is the rather dinky Wren-built red-brick building, whose northeastern turret
