The excellent
National Maritime Museum
houses a vast collection of boats and nauticalia,
imaginatively displayed in modern, interactive galleries designed to appeal to visitors of all
ages. The glass-roofed central courtyard houses the museum's largest artefacts, among them
the splendid 63ft-long gilded
Royal Barge
, designed in Rococo style for Prince Frederick,
the much unloved eldest son of George II.
The numerous themed galleries of the museum proper are superbly designed to appeal to
visitors of all ages, but if you have kids in tow, head for Floor 2, where you'll find the
Chil-
dren's Gallery
, which gives a taste of life at sea, loading miniature cargo, firing a cannon,
learning to use Morse Code and so forth. Older children and adults alike will enjoy honing
their ship handling skills on the
Ship Simulator
next door.
A bright white Palladian villa flanked by colonnades, the
Queen's House
is the focal point
of Greenwich's riverside architectural ensemble and an integral part of the Maritime Mu-
seum. Inside, one or two features survive from Stuart times, most notably the cuboid Great
Hall, and the beautiful cantilevered Tulip Staircase. The rooms now provide a permanent
