The high points of north London, both geographically and aesthetically, the elegant,
largely eighteenth-century developments of Hampstead and Highgate have managed to
cling on to their village origins. Of the two, Highgate is slightly sleepier and more aloof,
Hampstead busier and buzzier, with high-profile intelligentsia and discerning pop stars
among its residents. Both benefit from direct access to one of London's wildest patches
of greenery, Hampstead Heath, where you can enjoy stupendous views over London, as
well as outdoor concerts and high art in and around the country mansion of Kenwood
House.
