The Science Museum is undeniably impressive, filling seven floors with items drawn from
every conceivable area of science, including space travel, telecommunications, time meas-
urement, chemistry, photography and medicine. The museum also puts on lively daily
demonstrations to show that not all science teaching has to be deathly dry.
First off, ask at the information desk in the Power Hall for details of the day's (usually
free) events and demonstrations. Most people will want to head for the four-floor Wellcome
Wing , with its interactive computers and IMAX cinema (tickets £10). To get there, you
must pass through the Making the Modern World , a display of iconic inventions from
Robert Stephenson's Rocket steam train of 1829 to the Ford Model T, the world's first mass-
produced car.
If you've got kids, head for the Launch Pad , the museum's chief interactive gallery where
they can experiment with water, waves, light and sound and build a catenary arch (and
knock it down again); “explainers” are on hand to try and impart some educational input.
