The first new bridge to be built across the Thames since Tower Bridge opened in 1894, the
sleek, stainless-steel Millennium Bridge is London's sole pedestrian-only river crossing. A
suspension bridge of innovative design, it famously bounced up and down when it first
opened and had to be closed immediately for two years for repairs. It still wobbles a bit, but
most people are too busy enjoying the spectacular views across to St Paul's Cathedral and
Tate Modern to notice.

Bankside is dominated by the austere power station transformed by the Swiss duo Herzog &
de Meuron into Tate Modern, where the Tate shows off its vast collection of international
modern art. The best way to enter is down the ramp from the west, so you get the full effect
of the stupendously large turbine hall , used to display one huge, mind-blowing installation.
