THE TOWER AND DOCKLANDS

One of the city's main tourist attractions, the Tower of London was the site of some of
the goriest events in the nation's history, and is somewhere all visitors should try and
get to see. Immediately to the east are the remains of what was the largest enclosed
cargo-dock system in the world, built in the nineteenth century to cope with the huge
volume of goods shipped in along the Thames from all over the Empire. No one thought
the area could be rejuvenated when the docks closed in the 1960s, but since the 1980s,
warehouses have been converted into luxury flats, waterside penthouse apartments
have been built and a huge high-rise office development has sprung up around Canary
Wharf.
