Spitalfields Market
was the capital's premier wholesale fruit and vegetable market until
1991. The western 1920s half of the market was replaced by a Norman Foster office devel-
opment, although part of the original facade survives on the north side of Brushfield Street.
The market now hosts a large, eclectic and fairly sophisticated selection of shops and stalls
selling crafts, clothes and food in the original red-brick and green-gabled 1893 building, to
the east.
