A place of pilgrimage for Methodists from all over the world, Wesley's Chapel was built in
1777, and heralded the coming of age of the faith founded by
John Wesley
(1703-91). The
interior is uncharacteristically ornate, with powder-pink columns of French jasper and a su-
perb, Adam-style gilded plasterwork ceiling. Predictably enough, the
Museum of Method-
ism
in the basement has only a passing reference to the insanely jealous 40-year-old widow
Wesley married, and who eventually left him. Wesley himself spent his last two years in
Wesley's House, a delightful Georgian place to the right of the main gates. On display inside
are his deathbed and an early shock-therapy machine he was particularly keen on.
