Despite the area's lack of obvious aesthetic charm, over the last decade, the East End
has become one of the city's most vibrant artistic enclaves, peppered with art galleries
and a whole host of cutting-edge bars and clubs. Spitalfields -and in particular Brick
Lane - lies at the heart of the old East End, once the first port of call for thousands of
immigrants over the centuries, and best known today for Sunday markets and cheap
curries. The scene has now spread north to Shoreditch and Dalston, and east to the
edges of the Olympic Park, former home of the 2012 Olympic Games.
