The Lord Mayor's sumptuous Neoclassical lodgings are now open to the public by guided

its barrel-vaulted, coffered ceiling. Also impressive is the vast collection of gold and silver
tableware, the mayor's 36-pound gold mace and the pearl sword given by Elizabeth I. Sc-
attered about the rooms are an impressive array of Dutch and Flemish paintings.

Hidden behind a modern red-brick office block, the Bevis Marks Synagogue was built in
1701 by Sephardic Jews who had fled the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal. It's the coun-
try's oldest surviving synagogue, and the roomy, rich interior gives an idea of just how
wealthy the worshippers were at the time. The Sephardic community has now dispersed
across London and the congregation has dwindled, but the magnificent array of chandeliers
ensure that it's a popular venue for candle-lit Jewish weddings.
