The City is where London began, and its boundaries today are only slightly larger than
those marked by the Roman walls and their medieval successors. However, you'll find
few visible leftovers of London's early days, since four-fifths of it burned down in the
Great Fire of 1666. The majority of Londoners lived and worked in or around the City
up until the eighteenth century - nowadays, it's primarily one of the world's main fin-
ancial centres and although 300,000 commuters work here fewer than 10,000 actually
live here. The City is only really busy Monday to Friday during the day, so if you're
looking for nightlife, you're best off heading for Clerkenwell, which lies on the City's
northwest fringe.
