A whiff of exclusivity still pervades the streets of Mayfair, particularly Bond Street and
its tributaries, where designer clothes emporia jostle for space with jewellers, bespoke
tailors and fine art dealers. Most Londoners, however, stick to the more prosaic pleas-
ures of Regent and Oxford streets, home to the flagship branches of the country's most
popular chain stores. It's here that Londoners are referring to when they talk of the
West End. Marylebone, to the north of Oxford Street, may not have quite the pedigree
and snob value of Mayfair, but it's still a wealthy and aspirational area, and its mesh of
smart Georgian streets and squares are a pleasure to wander, especially the chi-chi,
village-like quarter around the High Street.
