ST JAMES'S PALACE
Marlborough Rd Green Park. www.royal.gov.uk . MAP
Originally built by Henry VIII for Anne Boleyn, St James's Palace became the principal
royal residence after Whitehall Palace burnt to the ground in 1698, until the court moved
down the road to Buckingham Palace under Queen Victoria. The imposing red-brick gate-
tower that forms the main entrance, and the Chapel Royal , are all that remain of the origin-
al Tudor palace. The rambling complex is off-limits to the public, though you can attend ser-
vices at the Chapel Royal (Oct to Good Friday 8.30am and 11.15am), venue for numerous
royal weddings, and at the Neoclassical Queen's Chapel (Easter Sun to July Sun 8.30am
and 11.15am).
