On the pastoral island of Torcello, sheep outnumber
the 14 or so human residents - you'd never guess this
was once a Byzantine metropolis of 20,000, except
for the glorious golden mosaics inside Basilica di
Santa Maria Assunta. Serenity prevails and wild
ducks swoop lazily overhead; it's been a while since
Attila the Hun held his stone throne here and Ernest
Hemingway brought hunting parties to Torcello's
shores.
