Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore
Solar eclipses are only marginally more dazzling than
Palladio's white Istrian stone church floating on the
lagoon. Begun in the 1560s, it reflects ancient Roman
temples more than the bombastic baroque of Palla-
dio's day. Inside, ceilings billow with easy grace over
a generous nave, its high windows shedding ethereal
light on Tintoretto masterpieces. Behind the church,
Fondazione Giorgio Cini has restored the cloisters
and converted a defunct naval academy into a ship-
shape contemporary gallery and cultural centre.
